Vietnam has had a long history of agricultural development. The country is among the top exporters of agricultural products in the world. This is partly due to the country’s tropical climate and its variety of plants. Throughout our history, these plant based products have been closely associated with the Vietnamese. The crafting of these products enabled the development of numerous trade villages which specialized in the utilization of different natural resources to make our products.
In the wake of the Global Green movement, Vietnam is pushing towards sustainability based on its existing abundance of sustainable resources. These are a number of Vietnamese Handicraft resources that promote sustainability.
Rattan plants

These plants are difficult to cultivate and are often harvested in the wild. They have a similar appearance to bamboo and sugar cane and are known as one of the most expensive non-timber materials found in nature.
Bamboo plants

Bamboo plants are found all over Vietnam due to their incredible survivability. Since ancient times, bamboo has benefited the Vietnamese through its products. They are durable enough that some minorities in Vietnam still use them to build houses. Bamboo is highly sustainable due to its fast growth. Some species of bamboo can grow by just under 1 meter in a span of 24 hours.
Seagrass

As the name suggests, this is a type of grass grown completely or partially submerged in rivers and lakes. They can be found in abundance throughout Vietnam. The frail seagrass will be dried and woven into strands as raw material for handicraft production.
Jute

Jute is the vegetable fiber produced from the flowering plants of the genus Corchorus. It is very easy to make and readily found throughout the countryside of Vietnam. Products woven with this material attain a softer texture as compared to other natural materials. Vietnamese artisans have been utilizing this material for generations, especially in simple footwear items.
With sustainable inputs, the handicraft industry of Vietnam has been aiming toward a sustainable supply chain. Vietnamese Handicraft Manufacturers have now shifted their focus on creating an efficient supply chain that maximizes return for all parties involved. From material sourcing to production process, and freight forwarding. This has ensured not only the long-term welfare of the business but also the preservation and continuation of Vietnamese traditional trade villages.
